Shimla - Capturing Nature's Love

Waking up (UTTAR PRADESH), oh-my! I realize that I am in Shimla. Shimla is like a love name for me, just like how I felt when I was in Jaipur and also Agra. Shimla, nestled in the serene hills of Himachal Pradesh, holds significant historical importance as the former summer capital of British India. Established in the early 19th century, it served as a pivotal center of colonial administration and cultural exchange, reflecting the grandeur of Victorian architecture and British influence. Today, Shimla stands as a testament to its storied past, attracting visitors with its cool climate, panoramic vistas of the Himalayas, and a blend of colonial charm with vibrant local culture. Its enduring appeal lies not only in its historical significance but also in its role as a picturesque retreat (SURAKARTA HEARTBEAT & BOROBUDUR ETERNAL LEGEND).

Having read about Shimla before I left home, now is the moment to find out if Shimla will become my love place. Arriving late at night, I couldn’t see much in the darkness. The true moment of seeing Shimla came after breakfast, as I stepped out of the resort. I stood outside and gazed up at the sky, the mountains, and the surrounding area. Shimla sincerely reflected the heart of nature - cool, serene, and calm. It was pure comfort, a place where you can let your mind wander far and beyond.

Next, we headed to Kufri, Himachal Pradesh, where the must-try, must-do lifetime experience awaited us: the horse ride to Mahasu Peak. Mahasu Peak, the highest point in the region, offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding Himalayan ranges. This picturesque destination is renowned for its tranquil environment, lush greenery, and adventure activities like hiking and horse riding. During winter, the peak transforms into a snowy wonderland, perfect for skiing and tobogganing.

Some of the group opted out, hesitant about the cost and adventure. But I was game for it. Coming this far and not giving it a go, like the Snow Mobile ride (HOKKAIDO WINTER TALES) in Hokkaido? That wasn’t me. Plus, the Shimla winter was still in a slow warm phase, making it perfect for the adventure ahead (HOKKAIDO WONDERLUST).

Though it is also known as a pony ride, all of the beauties, the horses, lined up as if programmed to behave perfectly by whoever was in charge of them. My guide, let’s just call him my horse ride guide, oh-wow, such an amazing soul. He held my hands and lifted me up gently onto the horse, reminding me to hold on tight to the rope with sign language, as I don’t speak Hindi and English wasn’t his mother tongue. My horse too, wow, another darling, and I decided he was a 'him'. Somehow, we felt a connection between our souls.

The ride began on the bumpy, muddy, rocky, and winding path. The bouncing and jerking is quite an experience, and if you don’t hold on tight, you can tumble or fall, or even go flying. Just like the couple in front of me, who actually fell  - two people on one horse, and they were quite a size.
Having said that, it’s a ride like the Indiana Jones ride, or maybe this one is the Shimla Jones ride. To tell you the truth, I was quite jerky inside, wondering if I would go flying as well. Passing by many others who were coming down and those ahead of me going up, it was truly such an experience.

About a kilometer away from where you need to walk up to Mahasu Peak, my horse guide held my hand daintily and helped me down from the horse. Wow! Such a gesture melted my heart. The Indian sentiment in me sparked. The touch and contact were full of kindness and care, making me feel like the most important woman in the universe. Oooooooo!!

To be continued...
