Essential Gardening Tips for Beginners

Ms. Nava showcasing her gardening passion
(Updated Version)

Congrats on taking the first step toward gardening (GARDENING TIPS FOR BEGINNERS). Whether you're working with a small patch or a larger plot, it’s always exciting to start your own garden. After cleaning up your plot, it’s time to dive into some essential gardening tips for beginners. Let’s get started.

Define Your Garden's Concept

It’s helpful to have a rough idea of the concept or theme for your garden. If you’re still deciding, don’t worry. A clear concept will give you direction as you begin. For instance, my garden’s theme is Zen, which led me to incorporate bamboo plants, stones, and pebbles. You could also choose a modern, traditional, or minimalistic theme. Without a clear concept, you may be planting without direction, so it’s worth spending some time thinking about what resonates with you.

What to Plant: Choose Based on Your Concept

Your garden’s concept will guide your plant choices. If you're into a modern theme, you might focus on vibrant flowers and a variety of plant species. If, like me, you lean toward a Zen concept, herbs, vegetables, and fruits with calming aromas could be ideal (LEMONGRASS/SERAI BENEFITS). Alternatively, you might want a simple green garden that focuses solely on oxygen-producing plants and doesn't include produce for cooking.

Where to Buy or Swap Plants

If you know gardening enthusiasts, they might be willing to share plants with you! I often share my plants with others because it's part of the passion for gardening. Nurseries and online stores are also great places to purchase plants. If you're patient, start with smaller plants and watch them grow. But if you're looking for quicker results, go for larger plants. Another great option is plant swapping with fellow gardeners - this can help you expand your collection without breaking the budget.

Gardening on a Budget: How to Save Smart

Budgeting is key in gardening. Start small and gradually add more plants as your garden grows. There’s no need to rush or overspend. Consider swapping plants with other gardeners to keep costs down. This is a fantastic way to grow your garden without spending a lot of money.

Time Allocation: Don’t Overwork Yourself
Gardening requires time, so it’s important to decide how many hours you can commit and which days work best for you. Don’t overdo it! Gardening every day can lead to burnout. If you need help, consider hiring a freelance gardener to assist with tasks, especially for bigger projects or maintenance.

Solo vs. Family Gardening: Enjoy the Journey Your Way
Gardening is a personal journey, whether you choose to do it solo or with your family. It's important to realize that not everyone will share your passion for gardening, and that's completely okay. If your loved ones want to join in, that’s great - but be prepared for some differences in opinion. Don’t force them to get involved if they’re not interested. Enjoy the process at your own pace and let your passion lead the way.
