Fitness Bra Buying: Handy Tips

Let's get to the part of shopping for the appropriate fitness or sports bra (The Power of Sports Bra in Yoga) for your yoga sessions. Even if you've bought one before, there's always something new to discover. I've been there myself, so trust me, you're in good hands.

Budget

First things first, let's talk money. How much are you willing to spend? We don't want to splurge and regret it later, right? Fitness bras can range from around $15 to several hundred dollars. So, set your budget and decide how many bras you want to get within that range.

Where to Buy

Sports Stores

If you're new to this, I recommend starting at sports stores. Sure, other places sell fitness gear, but big sports retailers have way more options. I remember my first time - I had no idea what to buy or which size would fit. You might need to try on a few to find the appropriate fit. Sizes can be tricky; you might be a small in one brand and a medium in another. So, don’t be shy- try on a few until you find the appropriate one.

Online Stores

Once you've tried on bras at sports stores, you'll have a better idea of what works for you when buying online. I've moved to this stage myself - no more trips to the store. But there are a few things to keep in mind. Always check the size chart and measure yourself before buying. Reading reviews is also a good idea. Even with all that, mistakes can happen - I’ve had my share of missteps. After some trial and error, I now stick to brands that fit me well. It's all part of finding the appropriate fitness bra.

Colors and Designs
Selecting colors is all about personal taste. I love bright and bold colors, while you may prefer pastels. Some women like plain, single colors, which is what I opt for, while others prefer patterns and designs. If you're unsure, ask those who know you well for their opinions - they can give you insight into what looks best on you or whether you should try something more adventurous.

Styles and Cuts
Bras come in various cuts, from conservative to more revealing. I have both types, and I choose based on who’s in my yoga session. For sessions with a more liberal group I go for low-cut fitness bras. When conducting a more conservative group, I opt for something less revealing. It’s all about finding what makes you confident.

Comfort

No matter what type you choose, your fitness bra should fit well and support you properly. Whether you prefer bras with padding or not, remember that most paddings can be removed if they're uncomfortable. If you find yourself constantly adjusting or fidgeting with it, it could mean it's the wrong fit, or you just need time to get used to it. Another sign of a poor fit is if you can't wait to take it off after your yoga session.

Wearing

Whether you choose a fitness bra with hooks at the back, one you slip on over your head, or one with a front zipper, you need to adjust it after putting it on. Make sure it sits well by lifting your breasts and securing them in place. Adjust the sides near your armpits too. If you don't, even the best fitness bra won't fit right, and your breasts might look lopsided, stick out from the sides, or even seem like they're about to fall out from your chest.

To Ponder

Be cautious when buying cheaper bras. I’ve bought a few that fit but felt flimsy and didn’t provide enough support- more suitable for young girls than a woman in her 60s. Also, think about how your fitness bra will pair with your yoga leggings. Coordinating colors can make a difference, and plain bras are usually a safe bet since they match with both plain and patterned leggings.

I've attached a video that you can also find on our YouTube channel. In it, I have shared tips on caring for your fitness bras and other useful advice.

Buying the appropriate fitness bra takes some trial and error, but it's worth the effort for the comfort and support you'll gain. Set a budget, try different stores, and consider your personal style and comfort. Remember, whichever type you choose, make sure to adjust it properly so it fits well and provides the necessary support. With an appropriate fitness bra, your yoga sessions will be more enjoyable and effective.

Happy buying and happy Zen yoga.
