Copenhagen, Denmark: Frederiksborg and Kronborg Castle

After a hotel breakfast (COPENHAGEN: BEST PLACES TO VISIT), we embarked on an exciting journey to explore two of Denmark’s most magnificent castles. Frederiksborg and Kronborg are more than just historic sites—they’re stunning symbols of Danish heritage.

Frederiksborg Castle

Our adventure began with Frederiksborg Castle, also known as Frederiksborg Slot. Situated on three small islands surrounded by a tranquil lake, this Renaissance marvel stands as the largest of its kind in Scandinavia. The castle’s red-brick towers, lush gardens, and scenic lake views took my breath away the moment we arrived.

Wandering through the castle gardens, I was captivated by the serene pathways lined with colorful flowers and ancient trees that seemed to whisper stories of the past. The castle's aura was incredibly peaceful, making it easy to lose myself in the beauty of the surroundings. As I approached the castle’s main viewpoint, the landscape unfolded in all its grandeur - a sight that left me spellbound.

Entering Frederiksborg Castle felt like stepping into a time capsule. The building has housed Denmark’s Museum of National History since 1878, thanks to J.C. Jacobsen, the Carlsberg brewer. Inside, exhibits brought Denmark’s past to life, from royal portraits to artifacts that reflect the cultural richness of the Danish people.

The Chapel of Frederiksborg, one of the castle’s most revered spaces, added an extra layer of depth to the visit. The intricate decorations and stunning architecture stirred an indescribable feeling within me. Standing in that sacred space, it was easy to imagine the generations that had walked those floors before me. The experience was simply unforgettable (SIEM REAP, CAMBODIA: WAT THAMEY)

Kronborg Castle
Kronborg Castle, often called Elsinore due to its fame as the setting of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, was our next adventure. Built in the 15th century by King Eric VII, Kronborg is one of Northern Europe’s most celebrated fortresses and was granted UNESCO World Heritage status in 2000. Its dramatic spires and stone walls give it a majestic appearance, setting the scene for the history waiting to be discovered within. Outside, the fortress walls offered stunning views of the sea - a reminder of Kronborg’s strategic importance and its role in guarding Denmark’s waters.

Almost Sweden: The Allure of the Nearby Shores

The surroundings of Kronborg were equally fascinating. I learned that the shores of Sweden are just a short ferry ride away—a crossing so close that I found myself drawn to the idea of an impromptu visit. Unfortunately, time wasn’t on our side, but it’s a journey I hope to make one day.

Onward to Oslo
With the day drawing to a close, we were reminded that our next adventure awaited us on the DFDS Scandinavian Seaways overnight cruise to Oslo. Boarding the ship, I took one last glance back at Kronborg’s silhouette against the darkening sky, knowing that the memories of these two iconic castles would stay with me long after we left Copenhagen.
