Coriander (Cilantro) vs. Culantro: Cooking and Health Tips

Coriander and yellow watermelon salad served in a hollowed-out watermelon rind
Coriander, commonly known as cilantro, is well recognized among those who cook (LEMONGRASS: NATURAL AROMATHERAPY WELLNESS DRINKS). However, culantro - also referred to as sawtooth coriander or ketumbar jawa - has yet to make the same culinary impact. In countries like Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, Puerto Rico, and Mexico, culantro is a beloved ingredient, yet many Malaysians remain unfamiliar with it. Surprisingly, some don't even realize that culantro exists, let alone use it in their cooking.

Pandan Leaves (Screwpine Leaves): Cooking, Growing, and Repellent

Pandan leaves growing in clusters, thriving in an urban garden setting

(Updated Version)

Speaking about pandan leaves, also known as screwpine leaves, already makes me feel enlivened. It's as though I can instantly catch a whiff of their amazing aroma. The beauty of pandan leaves lies in their delightful scent - sweet, grassy, and slightly nutty, with a hint of coconut. I consider pandan leaves to be the Malaysian and Asian equivalent of vanilla beans, especially in their green form.

Cooking Uses of Pandan Leaves

This fragrant essence uplifts various dishes, from our beloved Malaysian desserts to savory meals. One notable savory dish is Nasi Lemak, where pandan leaves can be added during cooking or blended to infuse both aroma and a natural green hue (EASIEST VEGETARIAN NASI LEMAK). In Malaysian desserts, pandan leaves are a customary and essential ingredient, enhancing flavors and providing a beautiful natural color (KUIH LOMPANG/KUIH KASWI).

Health Benefits and Natural Aromatherapy

The versatility of pandan leaves extends beyond cooking. They can also be used to infuse liquids, making fragrant teas or desserts. You can simply simmer some leaves and drink the water, which offers health benefits. Pandan is an excellent source of vitamins and antioxidants known to help boost the immune system and prevent conditions like cancer and heart disease. As the leaves simmer, they release their aroma, which scents your kitchen beautifully. Take a moment to enjoy this scent - it's like natural aromatherapy.

Growing Pandan Leaves

I’ve been growing pandan leaves for quite some time, and in Malaysia, they are relatively easy to cultivate. While some may struggle, the best method is to plant them directly in the ground, where they can flourish in clusters. However, growing them in pots is also an option; just be cautious not to overwater, as this can lead to root rot. They can thrive without fertilizers as well. Overall, pandan leaves are resilient and adaptable, thriving in warm, humid environments and requiring minimal care, making them an ideal choice for anyone who wants to grow them.

Natural Insect Repellent

Did you know that pandan leaves also serve as a natural insect repellent, especially against cockroaches? To use them effectively, simply wash the leaves, tie them in a bundle, and place them in dark areas where cockroaches tend to hide, such as cupboards and drawers. This natural remedy is a fantastic alternative to chemical repellents, allowing you to maintain a healthier home environment.

Bringing Nature Indoors

For me, pandan leaves are not just for cooking or repelling insects; they also bring a touch of nature indoors. After washing them thoroughly, I place them in vases or empty bottles filled with water around the house, including the kitchen. Just make sure to add some mosquito repellent to the water. Later, you can transplant these leaves into pots or into the ground.

Cultural Significance and Potpourri

Moreover, pandan leaves are often used in traditional rituals and cultural practices across various Southeast Asian communities. They symbolize good fortune and are utilized in offerings and decorations during festivals and special occasions, adding a sense of authenticity and cultural heritage to any gathering. Additionally, dried pandan leaves can enhance potpourri, infusing spaces with their refreshing aroma and contributing to a calming atmosphere.

Celebrating Pandan Leaves

Placing a bundle of pandan leaves in your bedroom can create a soothing atmosphere for the breath, body, mind, and soul. They enliven the vibrancy of your space, and once they dry out, make sure to dispose of them properly. You can even place pandan leaves in your car for a natural aromatherapy effect, making your daily commute a more pleasant experience.

Let’s celebrate pandan leaves, or screwpine leaves, as a natural gift for cooking and a source of beauty for the breath, body, mind, and soul. With their aromatic properties and versatile uses, pandan leaves truly embody the essence of nature's bounty, enriching our culinary experiences while promoting a harmonious living environment.

Easy Tips for Growing Spring Onions in Urban Gardens

Spring onions are known by different names around the world - green onions, scallions, bunching onions, or Welsh onions. In Malaysia, we commonly refer to the green stalks that sprout from onions or shallots as spring onions. I only discovered they’re also called scallions after using the term "spring onions" and finding out they go by both names. Regardless of what you call them, did you know how easy it is to grow spring onions?

Repurposing Shallots and Onions for Growing Spring Onions

Never throw away onions or shallots that are no longer suitable for cooking or are about to spoil. These can easily be repurposed to grow spring onions. That’s exactly how I grow mine.

Nature is truly captivating. It fills our lives with joy and peace. But nature also needs our help. As climate change makes the weather hotter and more unpredictable, we depend more on air conditioners, even for our babies. Yet, people miss the benefits of urban gardening. It can cool our homes and naturally relieve stress (Bay Leaves Healing Therapy). Urban gardening helps the environment and fills the air with the soothing scent of flowers, offering a peaceful escape from the stress that harms us.

Enter Ms. Nava, the founder of Nava's Zen, a true enthusiast of urban gardening. Today, she introduces us to the enchanting bread flower, also known as Kesidang, Kerak Nasi, Tikar Seladang, or Vallaris Glabra (Ylang Ylang). Rangoon Creeper: Cultivating Zen Blooming Bliss

Rangoon Creeper, also known as Combretum Indicum, goes by many names like Drunken Sailor, Akar Dani, Chinese Honeysuckle, and Red Jasmine. It's like a breath of fresh air in Nava's Zen. Can you believe it? Even at 60, I find myself climbing the ladder to prune and trail my Rangoon Creeper. This lovely plant is native to tropical Southeast Asia, especially Burma (now Myanmar), where it got its common name, "Rangoon Creeper," in honor of the former capital, Rangoon, now known as Yangon. I remember when I visited Myanmar about 8 years ago; I didn't even notice any Rangoon Creeper. Maybe I wasn't paying attention, who knows?

Eco Living: Small Changes, Big Impact in Nava's Zen Philosophy

Ms. Nava, the visionary founder of Nava's Zen, has been a vocal advocate for sustainable living, green practices (Eco Friendly Delights On Banana Leaves), and the urgent need to save our planet. While urban gardening remains a powerful tool in the fight against climate change (Human Impact On Climate), there are numerous other avenues for individuals to make a positive impact. It's time for everyone to play their part in preserving our environment, and one compelling option is adopting an eco-friendly lifestyle. Eco living encompasses a broad spectrum of choices, and a simple yet effective change is opting for walking over driving whenever feasible. Not only does walking contribute to savings on petrol, but it also saves time spent searching for parking spaces and promotes personal fitness. Of course, practicality should guide this decision, taking into account the achievable distance and weather conditions.

Nava's Zen: Cultivating Green Living in Urban Zen

The passion for sustainable living (Cultivating Sustainable Living) seamlessly transitioned into the heart of my nature-inspired fitness zen, Nava's Zen. This time around, I expanded the concept to embrace the essence of green living. Bringing this vision to life required significant self-financing, involving a substantial portion of my savings and a contribution from my husband. The transformation began with the porch of our zen, nestled in a double-storey link house adjacent to our home. This space underwent a complete makeover, with the contractor's fee, soil addition, and various other necessities being covered to convert it into a haven of green living (Cultivating Convenient Gardening).

Turmeric Fish Recipes: Healthy Fried, Grilled & Wrapped Creations

(Updated Version)

Turmeric, often referred to as the "golden goddess" of the kitchen, is a staple ingredient in mine. How about you? Is this vibrant, golden-yellow spice a regular in your cooking? If not, it's worth considering. I personally use both dried Indian turmeric powder for curries (INDIAN FISH AND SALTED FISH PUMPKIN CURRY), stir-fries, and more, as well as fresh turmeric, known as kunyit hidup in Malay. At Nava's Zen, we even grow fresh turmeric in a large pot. Although some advice me to dry and grind it, I prefer using it fresh, along with its leaves, especially in my Malay dishes, which I prepare frequently.

After cleaning up your plot, it’s time to dive into some essential gardening tips for beginners. Let’s get started.

Define Your Garden's Concept

It’s helpful to have a rough idea of the concept or theme for your garden. If you’re still deciding, don’t worry. A clear concept will give you direction as you begin. For instance, my garden’s theme is Zen, which led me to incorporate bamboo plants, stones, and pebbles. You could also choose a modern, traditional, or minimalistic theme. Without a clear concept, you may be planting without direction, so it’s worth spending some time thinking about what resonates with you.

Ylang-Ylang, a cherished part of Nava's Zen, is a natural essence that perfectly aligns with our zen yoga-fitness-oriented nature therapy. The delightful aspect of ylang-ylang lies in its vibrant yellow flowers and their captivating scent. To enhance this aromatic experience, I even place some of the flowers in our rainwater barrel, where they gracefully float and infuse the water with their enchanting fragrance.

Gardening Tips for Beginners

Gardener on ladder in Nava’s Zen garden
(Updated Version)

Not sure how to start or where to begin your gardening journey? Don’t worry! With over 20 years of experience, I’m here to guide you step by step. Gardening doesn’t have to be overwhelming - it’s all about keeping it simple and fun. In this article, we’ll focus on gardening on the ground, leaving aside container gardening for the time being. Let’s dig in.

Where to Plant
Start by identifying a plot of land within your compound. Even a small area, like the patch of land near your gate, can work wonders. Consider how much space you have and choose a location that gets enough sunlight. Accessibility for watering and maintenance is key - ensure it’s easy to reach and work with.

Cleaning Up
Before planting, clear the area thoroughly. Remove weeds, rocks, and debris from both the surface and below the soil. A clean foundation is essential for healthier plants and makes planting easier. Remember, the larger the plot, the more time it will take to prepare, so start small if you’re a beginner.

Nutrient-rich soil for gardening

Soil Matters

Examine the soil type in your chosen area. In Malaysia, clay soil is common but tends to harden quickly, especially in hot weather. If the soil is too hard, water won’t penetrate deeply, which can hinder plant growth. Consider enhancing the soil by mixing in black soil or compost. Black soil not only improves moisture retention but also adds an attractive contrast when paired with lush green plants.

Essential Tools
Equip yourself with the basics:

A hand trowel for planting and digging.

Pruning shears for trimming plants.

Garden gloves for protection and comfort.

A watering can for precise watering.

Start with these essentials and expand your toolkit as needed. For example, a small shovel and soil moisture meter can be helpful once you’re more experienced.

Essential gardening tools for beginners

Protection and Safety

Always wear gardening gloves - they protect your hands from dirt, thorns, and insects. Consider gardening boots if you’re working on uneven or rocky ground. If you’re out in the sun for long hours, a wide-brimmed hat and sunscreen are must-haves for your safety.

What to Plant
Choose plants suited to your climate and environment. As a beginner, focus on low-maintenance options. Those grow easily and are satisfying to nurture. Avoid  ambitious choices to start; small successes will build your confidence as you grow your green thumb.

Learning Along the Way
Gardening is an ongoing learning experience. Read books, explore online resources, or join free gardening workshops if available. Don’t hesitate to ask for advice at local nurseries - most staff are happy to share tips. Every plant you grow teaches you something new, making the journey all the more rewarding.

Gardener’s credentials and expertise

Dedication and Passion

Gardening requires time, effort, and a love for the process. Be prepared to get sweaty and dirty - it’s part of the experience. Dedication and passion will help you enjoy the challenges and rewards that come with nurturing your own green haven.

Happy gardening. In the next article, we will dwell into other matters on gardening.
