Fraser's Hill, Pahang - Quiet Getaway

Posing at Fraser's Hill entrance
Our journey took us from Raub (RAUB PAHANG MUSANG KING) to Fraser's Hill, a place I had never visited before. Located in Pahang, this hill station has a rich history. It was named after Louis James Fraser, a Scottish trader who discovered it in the late 1800s. After his mysterious disappearance in the early 1900s, the area remained abandoned until 1917 when British official J. Ferguson-Davie rediscovered it and saw its potential as a peaceful retreat.

What to do in Bentong, Pahang: A Simple Trip

Charming Bentong town decorated with large red hanging lanterns
It was a spur-of-the-moment trip to Bentong, Pahang - a chance to explore the town and see what it had to offer. Located about an hour and a half drive from Selangor, Bentong is a small town in the heart of Pahang. We set off on a quiet weekday with no real plans, ready to let the journey unfold as it would (TOP THINGS TO DO IN BETONG, THAILAND).

While Bentong was once a peaceful town, it has now grown with more visitors and activity. Even on a weekday, the traffic was busy, and finding a parking spot was a bit tricky. After finally parking, we began our stroll through the town to check out the coffee shops.

Top Things to Do in Betong, Thailand

Visit Namtok Inthason Waterfall
Before heading to lunch (EXPLORING BETONG, THAILAND: HIDDEN GEMS), we decided to make a stop at Namtok Inthason Waterfall. The atmosphere was serene, almost eerily quiet, as we were the only ones there. Though we spent less than 10 minutes, the surrounding nature and the sound of cascading water provided a truly soothing moment of relaxation (MUST-VISIT SIGHTS IN TURKEY).

Exploring Betong, Thailand: Hidden Gems and Local Flavors

Woman posing in the garden outside Piyamit Tunnel, Betong
By 7:00 am (BETONG: WEEKEND TRIP OF DISCOVERIES), freshly showered, I headed down to the lobby, ready for the day ahead. Joined by a friendly couple, we ventured out in search of breakfast. Betong was bustling with coffee shops, many reminiscent of those in Malaysia, along with roadside stalls and hawker carts offering local delights. We finally settled on a coffee shop with a Thai signboard, and as we tucked into crispy Char Kway (Chinese Crullers) and fried dough, washed down with a warm cup of coffee, it felt like the perfect start (ONE-DAY DUBAI ADVENTURE) - simple and satisfying.

Betong, Thailand: Weekend Trip of Discoveries

Betong? I wondered, Where is Betong? What’s there to see in Betong? These were my questions when a couple, a husband and wife, invited me to join them on a trip there. It didn’t really matter where Betong was or what it offered, as I'm always ready to explore new places (BERGEN SIGHTSEEING & DENMARK-NORWAY REFLECTIONS). I also love road trips - the free and easy, no-pressure kind where you go with the flow and discover something new. I soon found out that Betong is a town in Southern Thailand, near the Malaysian border.

With bags packed for a weekend trip, we set off on Friday morning for a three-day adventure. By 9:00 AM, we hit the road, and the drive through Pengkalan Hulu, Perak, on narrow, winding roads was breathtaking. Towering trees and untouched virgin jungle lined both sides of the road, offering us a scenic, mind-soothing view until we reached the border.

One-Day Dubai Adventure: Must-See Attractions & Desert Safari

One of those unexpected twists turned into an adventure I didn’t see coming. After boarding my flight in Turkey (TURKEY TRAVELGRAM: BEYOND BORDERS), everything seemed ready to go, but the plane decided to stay grounded for almost an hour. Passengers scratched their heads as vague announcements about “technical hiccups” left us wondering when we’d finally take off. Two hours later, we were airborne, but by the time we landed in Dubai, my connecting flight to KLIA had already left - oh dear! With nothing to do but wait, I learned the next flight wouldn’t be until the same time the next day.

Here’s where the plot thickens! The airline sorted out a one-day stay at the Copthorne Hotel Dubai, complete with three meals to keep us fueled. While waiting for the room allocation, I made friends with the rest of the passengers, and with a tour agent in sight, we inquired about tours and agreed on a half-day Dubai city tour. We also booked the famed Sunset Desert Safari for later. Sometimes, a travel hiccup can turn into a thrilling adventure - let the journey continue.

Must-Visit Sights in Turkey

The journey in Turkey continued (ISTANBUL TIMELESS TRAVELS). Quite an exhausting one, from place to place, with only two more days before it was time to say bye-bye to Turkey (TURKEY MUST-SEE SIGHTSEEING SPOTS).

Sultanhanı/Aksaray

Sultanhani Caravanserai, located about 40 km (25 mi) from Aksaray on the way from Konya, was built in the 13th century as a safe trading post and way station on the Silk Road. Constructed between 1229 and 1236 by Turkish Sultan Alaaddin Keykubat I, the Sultanhani Caravanserai has been restored numerous times over its eight centuries of existence. Over time, the caravanserai became a stopover for traders heading to Istanbul.

Turkey's Must-See Sightseeing Spots

Having explored Istanbul's rich of history and culture (ISTANBUL TIMELESS TRAVELS), which was not only fulfilling but also breathtaking during this early winter (DENMARK-NORWAY REFLECTIONS), my journey through Turkey continued to other places for more famous sightseeing spots. From ancient marvels to picturesque landscapes (COMO, LUGANO & MILAN), each stop offered a new perspective and unforgettable experiences. Join me as I share the highlights of my travels beyond Istanbul.

Çanakkale - Troy

Troy, one of the world's most renowned archaeological sites, boasts a history spanning 4,000 years and was unearthed in the 19th century. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, ancient Troy is famed for its association with the legendary Trojan War. This pivotal Greek mythological tale, centered around Trojan prince Paris and his abduction of Helen, sparked a decade-long conflict.

Istanbul, Turkey: Discovering Through Timeless Travels

Turkey, the crossroads of Europe and Asia, boasts a rich history influenced by both continents. This unique blend of European and Asian (CHANDIGARH, NORTH INDIA URBAN MARVELS) traditions creates a vibrant and diverse culture. As a popular tourist destination, Turkey attracts visitors year-round. I recently spent 8 days exploring this fascinating country, starting in Istanbul and traveling through Canakkale, Kusadasi, Pamukkale, Cappadocia, Ankara, and Bolu. The long coach journeys, depending on the distance (SURAKARTA INDONESIA HEARTBEAT), sometimes took almost a full day, with stops at attractions and breaks for meals and comfort. Curious about the places (PRETORIA SOUTH AFRICA MOMENTS) I visited in Turkey? Come, follow me on my journey through this country.

Penang Sightseeing: The Wonders of Malaysia

Alright, travelers, you've already got a taste of what Penang has to offer, but hold onto your hats because we're about to unveil even more sights! Let’s go. Get ready for the next chapter of your Penang adventure as we explore these captivating destinations (PENANG DESTINATIONS).

Kek Lok Si Temple (Air Itam, Balik Pulau)
Stepping into Kek Lok Si Temple, a legendary and historical treasure nestled against a hill slope, I immersed myself in Malaysia's rich Buddhist heritage. The tranquil "Pond of Longevity" greeted me, followed by the awe-inspiring Pagoda of Rama VI. Inside, I marveled at the array of statues, including the iconic Laughing Buddha

Ascending via the funicular railway, I reached the hilltop to encounter the impressive bronze statue of Kuan Yin, surrounded by serene spots like the Water Pavilion and Zodiac Garden. Gazing at the breathtaking panoramic view (LANGKAWI ISLAND HOPPING), I departed, filled with awe and reverence.

Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai: An Enriching Tour

A business trip brought me to Chiang Mai, Thailand, where amidst meetings and engagements, I seized the opportunity (EXPLORING KRABI & PHUKET) to explore both Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai. Despite my limited time, I managed to visit some sights (HANOI URBAN WONDERS) in these Thai cities.

CHIANG MAI
Wat Phra That Doi Suthep Temple
What a thrilling ride up the 15km winding mountain road to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep! The journey felt like ascending towards the sky, filled with excitement and anticipation. Founded in 1383, this temple holds deep historical significance in Thai Buddhism. Legend has it that a sacred white elephant chose the site by circling the area and trumpeting thrice before lying down, indicating its suitability for construction (YOGYAKARTA TEMPLES & SURAKARTA HEARBEAT).

Penang, Malaysia: Discover Sightseeing Destinations

I've visited Penang seven or eight times now, hopping between hotels in Butterworth like Ixora Hotel, Light Hotel, Pearl View Hotel, Sunway Hotel, and Aroma Hotel, as well as staying in Penang itself at Flamingo Hotel, Rasa Sayang, Equatorial Hotel, and E & O Hotel. When it comes to sightseeing, Penang, famously known as "The Pearl of the Orient," certainly lives up to its reputation.(KOTA KINABALU UNMASKING).

But regardless of my purpose for visiting Butterworth or Penang Island (PENANG THAIPUSAM), there's one activity I never miss: taking the Ferry Ride. Whether I'm crossing into Penang from Butterworth or returning, I've done it about 7 times already, and each time brings a renewed sense of exhilaration. There's a unique serenity to being out on the water, feeling the gentle breeze against my face - it's like a refreshing reset for my breath, mind, body, and soul (PULAU KETAM: SERENE ESCAPE).

And when it comes to sightseeing, I've had my share of experiences, and let me begin now.

Bergen, located on the west coast of Norway (THINGS TO EXPERIENCE IN NORWAY), is the country’s second-largest city and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Known for its picturesque harbor, surrounding mountains, and frequent rainfall, Bergen has earned the nickname "the city of rain." Despite its wet weather, the city is famous for its charm, rich history, and vibrant cultural scene. Founded over 900 years ago, it has long been a hub for trade, particularly as part of the Hanseatic League, and its well-preserved architecture and historical sites offer a glimpse into the past. With its location near the fjords, Bergen also serves as the gateway to some of Norway’s most famous natural wonders, making it a popular destination for travelers (COPENHAGEN, DENMARK CASTLES).

Oslo, Norway: Top Attractions and Things to Do

Akershus Fortress: A Glimpse into Oslo’s Past
Our first stop (COPENHAGEN: KRONBORG CASTLE) was Akershus Fortress, a historical gem dating back to 1290, originally constructed to defend Oslo from invasions. This impressive stone structure has served various roles over the centuries, including a royal residence and a military base. Walking through the grounds, we admired the views over the harbor and Oslofjord, along with the beautiful rose garden. Though we couldn’t enter the Armed Forces Museum, it’s a must-visit for military history enthusiasts. Akershus offers a unique mix of history, beauty, and tranquility - a perfect way to start our day (PERTH, AUSTRALIA: ATTRACTIONS & DINING).

Copenhagen, Denmark: Frederiksborg and Kronborg Castle

After a hotel breakfast (COPENHAGEN: BEST PLACES TO VISIT), we embarked on an exciting journey to explore two of Denmark’s most magnificent castles. Frederiksborg and Kronborg are more than just historic sites—they’re stunning symbols of Danish heritage.

Frederiksborg Castle

Our adventure began with Frederiksborg Castle, also known as Frederiksborg Slot. Situated on three small islands surrounded by a tranquil lake, this Renaissance marvel stands as the largest of its kind in Scandinavia. The castle’s red-brick towers, lush gardens, and scenic lake views took my breath away the moment we arrived.

Although we only viewed it from the outside, the palace’s grandeur and historical significance left a lasting impression on all of us.

Exploring Krabi and Phuket: Thailand's Coastal Gems

Humans are funny creatures indeed. Despite the increasing number of women traveling solo for various reasons (BANGKOK SOLO TRIP) like business, work-related trips, or simply holidays, people still seem puzzled and ask the same old question - why am I traveling alone (? When this question comes from Asians, I can understand their curiosity, as it might be uncommon to see an Indian woman of my age, in my late 50s, traveling solo (HANOI CULTURE).

However, it's quite alarming when I receive the same inquiry from Westerners, especially considering the thousands of Western women venturing out alone. What could be behind this universal curiosity about solo female travelers? It's a question that leaves me intrigued. While pondering over this, let me share my solo adventure, a short and sassy trip to Krabi and Phuket, which are considered paradises for Westerners (PRETORIA MOMENTS & CAPE TOWN STEALER).

Pulau Ketam: A Serene Escape into Island Living

After our tea break (PULAU KETAM TIMELESS CHARM), we were eager to discover more of Pulau Ketam. As we strolled, we noticed the police station and faintly saw the schools. In this village, people mainly get around by cycling, with occasional motorbikes on the narrow lanes, which serve as the main roads.

Our walk took us to the other side of the village, where we visited three temples. The first temple was slightly further from the jetty, and the second was officiated by the late Tan Sri Manickavasagam. While at the third temple, we chose to skip seeing the snake in the cage. We also couldn't overlook the captivating murals adorning the walls. Naturally, we couldn't resist snapping photos to immortalize our visit (MALACCA RIVER CRUISE, AYUTTHAYA CRUISE & JEJU ISLAND).
